I’ve been experimenting more and more with a monochromatic feel in my work, and this piece is one of my favorite outcomes so far. Earlier this year, I got an email asking if I had ever created a piece with a sailboat in it...and I hadn’t. It felt like the perfect opportunity to bring together a dark sky, a moody mountain backdrop, and the quiet solitude of a boat. There’s a sense of an oncoming storm in this one, and the emotion it holds really struck me as I was building it. I’m honestly so thrilled with how it came together.
I’m often asked if I wash the rope I use, and the answer is—almost never. This piece is a great example of why. The rope I used for the sky is all the same, but the natural dirt and wear created this incredible gradient from dark to light, which gives the sky a raw, almost cinematic depth.
This piece isn’t based on any one place in particular, and that’s part of what I love about it. It leaves space for the viewer’s own memories, emotions, and interpretations- whether it reminds you of a storm you’ve weathered, a crossing you’ve made, or a quiet moment before the wind picks up.
